Biographical Record
Hendrik Witbooi (!Nanseb /Gâbemab, c. 1830–1905) was a deeply religious leader who kept meticulous diary journals in Dutch recording treaties, correspondence, and battle plans. In the 1890s, recognizing that Imperial Germany intended to dispossess indigenous Africans of their cattle and lands, Witbooi warned Herero Chief Samuel Maharero to unite against the common colonizer.
In October 1904, appalled by General Lothar von Trotha's genocidal extermination order against the Herero, the 74-year-old Witbooi called the Nama nation to arms. Waging brilliant guerrilla warfare across the Kalahari desert, his mounted riflemen outmaneuvered the German imperial army until he fell in battle in October 1905.
