Helmut Kohl was a German statesman who served as Chancellor of Germany from 1982 to 1998 (of West Germany 1982–1990 and of unified Germany 1990–1998). As the longest-serving German chancellor since Bismarck, he seized the historic window created by the fall of the Berlin Wall to achieve German reunification and co-authored the Maastricht Treaty.
