Biographical Record
Originating from Flanders or Brabant, Isaac arrived in Florence in the early 1480s, becoming chief musician and organist to Lorenzo the Magnificent and music tutor to the Medici children (including the future Pope Leo X).
In 1497, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I appointed Isaac Court Composer (Hofkomponist). Isaac synthesized Netherlandish contrapuntal complexity with Italian melodic grace and German lyricism, leaving behind Choralis Constantinus, a colossal three-volume cycle providing polyphonic settings for the entire liturgical year.
