"The master sculptor who cast the immortal spirit of Ibn Khaldun into bronze."

Archival Overview

Foremost pioneer of modern sculpture in Tunisia, whose monumental bronze statues of national heroes—notably Ibn Khaldun at Place de l'Indépendance—anchor civic space in Tunis.

Biographical Record

Hédi Selmi studied fine arts in Tunis and sculpture in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière under Ossip Zadkine. Returning to newly independent Tunisia, he established modern sculpture as an autonomous discipline in a society with few three-dimensional figurative traditions.

His monumental bronze statue of Ibn Khaldun, erected in 1978 in the center of Avenue Habib Bourguiba, is one of the most recognizable public landmarks of the capital. He mentored three decades of sculptors at the Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts de Tunis.
