Biographical Record

Hedi Chaker (c. 1908–1953) was a prominent merchant and nationalist organizer in Sfax. Joining the Neo-Destour party at its historic Ksar Hellal Congress in 1934, he established Sfax as a mighty political counterweight to French colonial authority in Tunis.

Repeatedly imprisoned in French military fortresses alongside Bourguiba, Chaker directed the clandestine resistance networks in southern Tunisia. In 1952, he was placed under strict house arrest in Nabeul. On September 13, 1953, French colonial terrorists of La Main Rouge abducted him from his home, executed him on a deserted road, and discarded his body, cementing his status as a national martyr.
