Archival Overview

Younger brother of Aruj who placed Algiers under Ottoman caliphal protection, destroyed the Spanish Peñón of Algiers, conquered Tunis, and routed Holy League navies at the Battle of Preveza in 1538.

Biographical Record

Khizr Reis, renamed Hayreddin (Goodness of the Faith) by Sultan Selim I, succeeded his brother Aruj as ruler of Algiers in 1518. Realizing that European powers would crush the young Algerian state, Hayreddin sent an embassy to Istanbul, submitting Algiers to the Ottoman Empire and receiving modern artillery and 2,000 elite Janissaries.

In 1529, Hayreddin stormed the Spanish fortress of the Peñón in Algiers bay, using its stones to construct the harbor jetty that made Algiers the unassailable maritime fortress of the Mediterranean. Appointed Kapudan Pasha (Grand Admiral) by Suleiman the Magnificent, his crushing triumph over Andrea Doria at the Battle of Preveza (1538) secured Ottoman naval supremacy for thirty years.
