Archival Overview

Fourth monarch of the Majapahit Empire whose reign alongside Prime Minister Gajah Mada represented the golden age of Indonesian maritime unity and classical Javanese culture.

Biographical Record

Ascending the throne at age sixteen in 1350, Hayam Wuruk ('The Scholarly Rooster') ruled alongside his brilliant prime minister (Mahapatih) Gajah Mada. The empire's maritime trade network and tributary suzerainty extended across the Indonesian archipelago, the Malay Peninsula, and parts of the Philippines.

Hayam Wuruk regularly toured rural provinces to inspect dikes, temples, and agricultural markets. His glorious reign was immortalized in 1365 by court poet Mpu Prapanca in the Old Javanese palm-leaf epic 'Nagarakretagama' (Kakawin Desawarnana), a cornerstone of Indonesian national history.
