Algerian freedom fighter and iconic martyr of the Battle of Algiers who abandoned university studies to transport explosives and coordinate clandestine networks in the Casbah of Algiers.
Biographical Record
Hassiba Ben Bouali (1938–1957) was born into a cultured family in Chlef and studied nursing in Algiers. Witnessing daily colonial apartheid and humiliation, she joined the FLN student union and was recruited into the autonomous Bomb Network commanded by Yacef Saâdi.
Using her European-style attire and fluent French to effortlessly bypass colonial military checkpoints, she transported weapons, secret funds, and explosive devices through French barbed wire. On October 8, 1957, French colonial paratroopers surrounded her hideout at 5 Rue des Abderrames in the Casbah, dynamiting the entire building when she, Ali La Pointe, and Little Omar refused to surrender.
