Archival Overview
Towering 20th-century Moroccan monarch who ruled for thirty-eight years, reclaimed the Western Sahara through the peaceful Green March in 1975, and built modern infrastructure including the Hassan II Mosque.
Biographical Record
Moulay Hassan was the eldest son of King Mohammed V, standing beside his father during their patriotic exile in Madagascar and the restoration of independence in 1956. Ascending the throne in 1961, Hassan II built a robust constitutional monarchy balancing traditional Islamic authority with modern state institutions.
In November 1975, he organized the historic 'Green March', mobilizing 350,000 unarmed Moroccan civilians marching with Qur'ans and flags to reclaim Western Sahara from Spanish colonial rule. A diplomatic mediator in the Arab-Israeli conflict and father of Morocco's extensive dam infrastructure ('Politique des Barrages'), he presided over deep modernization until his passing in 1999.
