Archival Overview
Umayyad supreme commander who conquered Byzantine Carthage in 698 AD, founded the city and naval shipyard of Tunis, established the Ez-Zitouna Mosque, and organized the civilian administration of Ifriqiya.
Biographical Record
Hassan ibn al-Nu'man, known as 'al-Shaykh al-Amin' (the Trustworthy Elder), was appointed governor of Ifriqiya by Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan with an army of 40,000 veterans. In 698 AD, Hassan captured the formidable Byzantine fortress of Carthage, dismantling its seaward walls to prevent Byzantine naval recapture.
Recognizing the strategic security of the Lake of Tunis, Hassan founded the new Arab-Islamic city of Tunis at the small Berber village of Tunes, digging a naval channel to the sea, building the naval arsenal (Dar al-Sina'a), and laying the foundations of the Ez-Zitouna Mosque, making him the historic father of the modern capital of Tunisia.
