Biographical Record
Moulay Hassan I (1836–1894) ruled Morocco during the perilous decades of the European Scramble for Africa. Realizing that European powers were waiting for any sign of internal weakness to colonize Morocco, Hassan I spent nearly his entire twenty-one-year reign living in royal military tents on horseback, leading imperial expeditions (harkas) across the Rif, Souss, Sahara, and Atlas to enforce order and collect taxes.
Hassan I sent Moroccan students to European military academies in Gibraltar, England, and France, established modern artillery arsenals (Makina in Fez), and outmaneuvered European imperial powers at the Madrid Conference of 1880, preserving Morocco's sovereignty when the rest of North Africa had fallen to France and Britain.
