Archival Overview
Foremost pioneer of modern Moroccan figurative painting whose dramatic, light-infused canvases of charging Berber horses, Tbourida fantasias, and Atlas landscapes were encouraged by Winston Churchill.
Biographical Record
Son of Thami El Glaoui, Pasha of Marrakesh, Hassan discovered painting in youth against aristocratic family expectations. In 1943, during a wartime visit to Marrakesh, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill saw young Hassan's sketches and convinced his father to permit him to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Over a sixty-year career, El Glaoui's paintings captured the majestic choreography of Moroccan equestrian culture, traditional horsemen in flowing white djellabas firing powder rifles in unison. Exhibited in London, Paris, and New York, his works remain icons of national cultural pride.
