Biographical Record
Hashim al-Atassi was born in Homs into one of Syria's most prominent scholarly and landed families. Educated at the Ottoman Imperial Civil Academy in Istanbul, he served as governor of Baalbek and Prime Minister under King Faisal I in 1920 before founding the National Bloc (Al-Kutla al-Wataniyya) to lead the peaceful diplomatic struggle for independence from French rule.
Atassi served three terms as President of the Syrian Republic (1936-1939, 1949-1951, and 1954-1955), earning universal admiration across all ideological factions for his absolute financial probity, unyielding adherence to the constitution, and defense of parliamentary democracy against military coups.
