Archival Overview

Grandson of King Masinissa's sister who served as Suffete of Carthage prior to the Third Punic War, advocating diplomatic alignment to avert war with Rome.

Biographical Record

Hasdrubal, nicknamed 'the Kid' (Haedulus) to distinguish him from his contemporaries, was a grandson of Masinissa's sister, uniting Carthaginian nobility with the Numidian royal house. Elected suffete in the tense years preceding the Third Punic War, he attempted to maintain a delicate balance between Roman ultimatums, Numidian territorial claims, and popular anger.

As Roman demands escalated toward the total evacuation and destruction of Carthage, extremist factions accused Hasdrubal of treason due to his family connections with Masinissa, attacking and killing him inside the Senate assembly.
