Biographical Record
Hasdrubal was the charismatic political architect of the Barcid renaissance following the First Punic War. Succeeding his father-in-law Hamilcar Barca as supreme commander in 229 BCE, he prioritized diplomatic alliances with Iberian tribal kings over costly warfare, marrying an Iberian princess.
In 228 BCE, he founded Qart Hadasht (New Carthage, modern Cartagena), creating one of the finest natural naval harbors in the Mediterranean with rich silver mines. In 226 BCE, he negotiated the Ebro Treaty with the Roman Republic, fixing the spheres of Mediterranean influence until his assassination in 221 BCE.
