Archival Overview
Distinguished Carthaginian senator and chief ambassador who led the embassy to Rome following the Battle of Zama in 202 BC, successfully persuading the Roman Senate to grant peace terms.
Biographical Record
Hasdrubal Haedus had long been an opponent of the aggressive war policies of the Barcid family. Following Hannibal's decisive defeat at Zama (202 BC), Carthage faced complete annihilation by Roman legions under Scipio Africanus.
Appointed chief of the embassy sent to the Roman Senate in 201 BC, Hasdrubal delivered an eloquent and dignified speech acknowledging Carthaginian faults while appealing to Roman magnanimity and the fragility of human fortune. His statesmanship secured the peace treaty that saved the city of Carthage from destruction for another fifty years.
