Archival Overview
Carthaginian military commander who defeated Publius Cornelius Scipio in Hispania, forged the fateful alliance with King Syphax of Numidia, and was the father of Queen Sophonisba.
Biographical Record
Hasdrubal, son of Gisco, was one of Carthage's primary strategists during the Second Punic War. In Hispania in 211 BCE, he outmaneuvered and killed Roman generals Publius and Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio at the Battle of the Upper Baetis.
Returning to North Africa, he arranged the political marriage of his brilliant daughter Sophonisba to King Syphax of the Masaesyli Berbers, cementing an anti-Roman alliance. After his defeat at the Great Plains in 203 BCE, he committed suicide in Carthage to evade mob fury.
