Biographical Record
Captured as a youth off Corsica, Pietro Paolo Tavera converted to Islam in Algiers, taking the name Hasan Corso. Recognized for his tactical brilliance and integrity, he was mentored by Salah Reis and rose to command the entire infantry and janissary forces of the Regency.
Upon the death of Salah Reis in 1556, the Diwan and populace unanimously acclaimed Corso as ruler to continue the siege of Spanish-held Oran. When a newly appointed Ottoman pasha, Tekelerli Mehmet, arrived from Istanbul, Corso was betrayed, captured, and executed, mourned widely across the city.
