Biographical Record

Hasan bey Malikov (Zardabi) was born on June 28, 1837, in Zardab. Overcoming immense barriers, he graduated with distinction from Moscow University's Faculty of Physics and Mathematics in 1865, becoming the first Azerbaijani university graduate in the natural sciences.

On July 22, 1875, Zardabi published the inaugural issue of Akinchi ('The Ploughman') in Baku, establishing the first newspaper in the Azerbaijani Turkic language. Using simple vernacular, he promoted modern agricultural methods, public health, women's education, and scientific rationalism. July 22 is honored as National Press Day in Azerbaijan in his memory.
