Archival Overview
Abbasid governor sent by Harun al-Rashid to govern Ifriqiya in 795 AD, who founded the monumental Ribat of Monastir in 796 AD, the oldest and best-preserved ribat fortress in North Africa.
Biographical Record
Harthama ibn A'yan was one of the most capable generals of the early Abbasid Caliphate, trusted by Caliph Harun al-Rashid with critical frontier commands. Appointed governor of Ifriqiya in 795 AD to restore order among mutinous garrisons, Harthama pacified the coastal cities.
Recognizing the constant vulnerability of the Tunisian coast to Byzantine naval raids, Harthama ordered the construction of the Great Ribat of Monastir in 796 AD (180 AH). This monumental stone citadel, dedicated to ascetic warrior-monks (Murabitun), stands intact today as Tunisia's oldest Islamic defensive monument. Harthama wisely advised Harun al-Rashid to grant hereditary rule to Ibrahim ibn al-Aghlab, founding the Aghlabid dynasty.
