Archival Overview
Southern Alberta irrigation pioneer and Social Credit statesman who served as Alberta's tenth premier, establishing Canada's first provincial Department of the Environment.
Biographical Record
Harry Edwin Strom was a successful irrigation farmer, cattle rancher, and community leader from Burdett in southern Alberta. Serving as Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Municipal Affairs under Ernest Manning, Strom was chosen to succeed Manning as Premier of Alberta in December 1968.
Strom's administration was notably forward-looking: in 1971, he created the Alberta Department of the Environment, the very first dedicated provincial environment ministry in Canada. Defeated by Peter Lougheed in 1971, Strom retired with universal respect for his integrity and rural stewardship.
