Archival Overview
Flamboyant and virtuosic Canadian painter, printmaker, and polemicist who co-founded Painters Eleven and invented the single-autographic print technique.
Biographical Record
Harold Barling Town was an incandescent force in mid-century Canadian art. A founding member of Painters Eleven in 1953, Town was renowned for his dazzling draughtsmanship, relentless experimentation across collage, sculpture, and painting, and his razor-sharp public wit.
In the mid-1950s, Town invented the "single autographic print," a monotype printmaking process that won international prizes at the Venice Biennale and São Paulo Biennial. His paintings hang in the Guggenheim, MoMA, and major Canadian museums, embodying the fearless avant-garde energy of postwar Toronto.
