Biographical Record
Nicknamed 'Nalwa' after tearing apart a live tiger's jaws with his bare hands during a royal hunt, Hari Singh (1791–1837) was Maharaja Ranjit Singh's most feared general. In 1818, he smashed the gates of Multan, conquered Kashmir in 1819, and captured the Afghan stronghold of Peshawar in 1834.
Nalwa built impregnable border fortresses—notably Jamrud Fort at the mouth of the Khyber Pass. In April 1837, outnumbered ten-to-one by Afghan forces at the Battle of Jamrud, Nalwa commanded from the ramparts despite fatal wounds, ordering his officers to conceal his death until Sikh reinforcements arrived, saving the frontier.
