Archival Overview
Preeminent Carthaginian general of the 4th century BC who subdued the Libyan interior, extended Carthaginian rule to the Gulf of Sirte, and led armies in the Sicilian wars against Dionysius of Syracuse.
Biographical Record
Hanno I the Great was the dominant military figure of Carthage in the mid-4th century BC. He conducted massive military campaigns throughout the fertile Medjerda valley and southern Tunisia, subduing rebellious Libyan tribes and establishing the agricultural hinterland that transformed Carthage into a self-sustaining continental power.
Later entrusted with naval operations against Dionysius of Syracuse, his immense personal wealth and private armies alarmed the oligarchy of the Carthaginian Senate. Accused of plotting to poison senators and seize monarchical power with the support of 20,000 enslaved laborers, he was captured and executed after an armed uprising.
