"The Bey of Tunis rules by the consent of his people and the courage of his army, not by orders from across the sea."

Archival Overview

Husainid Bey of Tunis whose thirty-two-year reign (1782–1814) marked the golden age of modern Tunisian statehood, defeating Venetian naval fleets and Algerian incursions while asserting independence from Ottoman Istanbul.

Biographical Record

Hammuda Pasha (1759–1814) was the fifth Bey of the Husainid dynasty. Highly educated and possessing commanding leadership, he transformed Tunis into a prosperous, sovereign regional power. When the Republic of Venice declared war on Tunis in 1784, Hammuda's coastal batteries and corsair fleet repelled Venetian admiral Angelo Emo's bombardment.

Hammuda fought two victorious wars against the Regency of Algiers (1807 and 1813), establishing fixed, recognized borders between Tunisia and Algeria. He curtailed the influence of the Turkish Janissary corps, replaced Ottoman officials with native Tunisians, constructed the Dar El Bey in the Medina, and established state armories and weaving factories.
