Archival Overview
Visionary Berber emir who founded the Hammadid dynasty, broke away from Zirid control, and constructed the UNESCO World Heritage fortress capital of Al Qal'a of Beni Hammad.
Biographical Record
Hammad ibn Buluggin was the son of Buluggin ibn Ziri. Entrusted by his nephew Badis with the military governorship of the central Maghreb, Hammad proved to be an extraordinary general, crushing Zanata revolts and securing the trade corridors between the Sahara and the Mediterranean.
In 1007 CE, Hammad began construction of a breathtaking fortified mountain capital, Al Qal'a of Beni Hammad, located on the forested slopes of the Djebel Maadid. In 1014 CE, he declared full independence from the Zirids and transferred spiritual allegiance to the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad.
