Archival Overview
Influential Carthaginian magistrate and suffete who led the democratic patriotic faction against Roman and Numidian diplomatic encroachments in the years preceding the Third Punic War.
Biographical Record
Nicknamed 'The Samnite' by Greek and Roman chroniclers for his fierce unyielding stubbornness, Hamilcar was the political leader of Carthage's democratic popular party in the 150s BCE, opposing the pro-Roman oligarchic senate faction that sought continual appeasement.
When King Masinissa of Numidia seized Carthaginian fertile lands in the Bagradas (Medjerda) valley, Hamilcar mobilized the citizen assembly to demand armed defense of the borders. His steadfast patriotism stiffened the city's resolve before the final Roman siege of 149 BCE.
