Founding Father and first President of the Republic of Niger who led the nation to independence in 1960, mediated regional conflicts, and co-founded the international Francophonie organization.

Biographical Record

Trained as an educator at the William Ponty School in Dakar, Hamani Diori (1916–1989) co-founded the Nigerien Progressive Party (PPN-RDA). Upon independence in August 1960, the National Assembly elected him first President of Niger.

Diori earned international respect as a skilled regional peacemaker, mediating the Chad civil conflict and the Nigerian-Biafran war. Alongside Senghor and Bourguiba, he was a chief architect of the Agency for Cultural and Technical Cooperation (ACCT) in Niamey in 1970, which founded the modern Organisation internationale de la Francophonie.
