Biographical Record
Ham Mukasa was born around 1870 in Buganda into an aristocratic family. As a young page in the royal enclosure of Kabaka Muteesa I, he witnessed the arrival of both Christian missionaries and Muslim traders, surviving the religious persecutions of the 1880s.
Appointed official secretary to Prime Minister (Katikkiro) Sir Apolo Kagwa, Mukasa accompanied Kagwa to England in 1902 to attend the coronation of King Edward VII. In 1904, he published Uganda's Katikiro in England, an extraordinary travelogue offering an observant, nuanced African critique of British industrial society, Victorian class structures, and imperial culture. He established Makerere University library collections and pioneered agricultural modernization.
