Archival Overview
Key behind-the-scenes organizer and financier of the Istiqlal Party in Fez and Casablanca who bankrolled underground newspapers, legal defense for detainees, and clandestine resistance logistics.
Biographical Record
Hajj Omar El Qadiri belonged to an old chorfa family in Fez with extensive trading enterprises in Casablanca and Manchester. Utilizing his commercial network, he secretly funded the distribution of clandestine nationalist tracts, subsidized free Moroccan schools, and financed the legal defense of arrested activists.
Arrested and interrogated following the 1952 Casablanca protests, he remained a steadfast patriot whose quiet financial heroism made possible the survival of the urban liberation movement.
