Biographical Record
Hage Geingob (1941–2024) was a central founding figure of independent Namibia. Joining the liberation movement SWAPO in the early 1960s, Geingob spent nearly three decades in exile lobbying the United Nations in New York and directing the UN Institute for Namibia in Lusaka, preparing young Namibians for self-government.
Returning in 1989, he chaired the Constituent Assembly that drafted Namibia's widely admired constitution, enshrining multi-party democracy and human rights. Upon independence in 1990, he became the nation's first Prime Minister, serving twelve years under founding President Sam Nujoma.
Elected President in 2014 by a resounding 87% majority, Geingob championed the \"Harambee Prosperity Plan\", promoted press freedom, and took a courageous stance on international human rights before passing away in office.
