Archival Overview

Beloved Egyptian national poet known as 'The Poet of the Nile', whose resonant verses championed the Egyptian peasant, celebrated the Arabic language, and mourned the victims of the Denshawai massacre.

Biographical Record

Muhammad Hafez Ibrahim (1872–1932) was born aboard a Nile riverboat near Dayrut. Graduating from the Royal Military Academy in Cairo, he served as an officer in the Sudan expedition before resigning to dedicate his life to literature and serving as director of the National Egyptian Library (Dar al-Kutub).

Unlike Shawqi's aristocratic court polish, Hafez was the fiery, empathetic poet of the streets and the impoverished masses. His explosive poem denouncing British atrocities at the 1906 Denshawai incident galvanized national anti-colonial revolt. His celebrated ode In Defense of the Arabic Language remains the most famous defense of Arabic against Western cultural encroachment.
