"My verses are the mirror of the oppressed; they sing the truth when voices are silenced."

Archival Overview

Prominent popular poet of Oran who chronicled social struggles, the tragedy of the 1914 war, and the awakening of Algerian national consciousness.

Biographical Record

Hachemi Bensmir was born and raised in the vibrant, patriotic native quarter of Medina Jdida in Oran. Working among dockers, railway laborers, and market merchants, he gave voice to the everyday joys, heartbreaks, and political grievances of ordinary Algerians living under harsh colonial discriminatory laws.

During World War I, Bensmir composed poignant anti-war elegies mourning the forced conscription of young Algerian men sent to the freezing trenches of Europe, such as his famous poem 'Biya Daq El Mor'. His works laid the political foundation for modern Oranian song and nationalist resistance culture.
