Archival Overview

Tunisian medical doctor and nationalist leader who directed the underground Neo-Destour party during WWII, founded the Arab Maghreb Liberation Committee in Cairo, and died in a plane crash in Pakistan.

Biographical Record

Habib Thameur (1909–1949) completed medical studies in Paris before returning to Tunis to practice medicine. Following the bloody French repression of the April 9, 1938 nationalist demonstrations and the arrest of Bourguiba, Thameur bravely took over direction of the clandestine Neo-Destour Political Bureau.

Escaping French arrest in 1944, he reached Cairo, where in 1948 he co-founded the Arab Maghreb Liberation Committee with Abdelkrim al-Khattabi to coordinate liberation struggles across Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia. While traveling to Lahore as Tunisia's diplomatic representative, he perished in a plane crash at age forty.
