Archival Overview

Revered resistance hero and civil leader of Bizerte who gave his life defending the city during the bloody July 1961 battle to evict the last French military naval base from Tunisian soil.

Biographical Record

Habib Bougatfa was a dedicated nationalist organizer and senior civil administrator in northern Tunisia. When tension erupted in July 1961 over the continued French colonial occupation of the strategic Bizerte naval base, Bougatfa organized civilian resistance, logistics, and medical relief.

During intense French air and artillery bombardments on July 21, 1961, Bougatfa refused to leave his post and was killed alongside hundreds of Tunisian volunteer defenders. Today, the Bizerte regional hospital and central avenues bear his name as an immortal symbol of the evacuation struggle.
