Archival Overview
Charismatic trade union giant and close comrade of Farhat Hached who led the UGTT through major confrontations with state power, notably the historic general strike of Black Thursday in January 1978.
Biographical Record
Born on the Kerkennah archipelago, Habib Achour was a co-founder of the UGTT in 1946 alongside Farhat Hached. In August 1947, he led the bloody Sfax railway workers' strike against French colonial troops, suffering gunshot wounds and imprisonment.
As head of the UGTT for multiple decades, Achour defended the independence of the working class against state subjugation, culminating in the general strike of January 26, 1978 (Black Thursday). Despite imprisonment and house arrest, his moral stature made him an indispensable mediator in national politics.
