Biographical Record
In 660 CE, the Kingdom of Baekje faced a catastrophic pincer invasion by 50,000 Silla troops under Kim Yu-sin and 130,000 Tang Chinese troops under Su Dingfang. Recognizing that defeat was inevitable, General Gyebaek resolved to fight to the death.
Before departing for battle, Gyebaek killed his own wife and children with his sword to spare them enslavement and humiliation by the enemy. At the plains of Hwangsanbeol, Gyebaek's 5,000 warriors repelled four successive assaults by Kim Yu-sin's 50,000 troops before being overwhelmed and dying to the last man. He remains the ultimate Korean symbol of tragic martial sacrifice.
