Archival Overview

Brilliant Canadian field commander in WWII who conceived the Kangaroo armored carrier and led the liberation of the Scheldt estuary.

Biographical Record

Lieutenant-General Guy Granville Simonds was widely recognized by Allied commanders, including Bernard Montgomery, as Canada's most brilliant operational battlefield general. Educated at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Simonds commanded the 1st Canadian Infantry Division during the invasion of Sicily and the Moro River Campaign in Italy.

As commander of II Canadian Corps in Normandy, Simonds conceived Operation Totalize and invented the "Kangaroo"—the world's first modern infantry armored personnel carrier. He masterminded the gruelling amphibious battle of the Scheldt in late 1944, clearing Antwerp's port for Allied victory, later serving as Chief of the General Staff.
