Archival Overview
Charismatic Creole orator and trade union titan known as the 'Uncrowned King of Mauritius' who led the Mauritius Labour Party, uniting sugar plantation workers across ethnic lines.
Biographical Record
Joseph Guy Rozemont was born on November 15, 1915, in Port Louis. Working as a sailor, clerk, and lorry driver, his magnetic empathy and thunderous oratorical power in Mauritian Creole propelled him to the forefront of the labor movement during the 1940s.
Succeeding Emmanuel Anquetil as president of the Mauritius Labour Party and the Engineering and General Workers' Union, Rozemont achieved what colonial authorities deemed impossible: uniting Creole artisans, dockers, and Indo-Mauritian sugar cane laborers into an unbreakable political coalition. In the landmark 1948 and 1953 general elections under expanded franchise, his campaigns won landslide victories. He died of diabetes at age forty, leaving an immortal legacy of working-class solidarity.
