Born as an impoverished orphan selling boiled chickpeas in Lahore, Bhai Jetha rose through immaculate humility to become Guru Ram Das; he founded the holy city of Amritsar (Ramdaspur) and composed the four sacred stanzas of the Sikh marriage covenant.
Biographical Record
Guru Ram Das Ji lost both his parents by age seven and was raised by his maternal grandmother in hardship. Possessing a serene disposition and sweet voice, he devoted his youth to voluntary manual labor at Goindwal, carrying earth on his head for the construction of the sacred well.
Founding the City of Immortality
Anointed fourth Guru by Guru Amar Das, he envisioned a magnificent new spiritual and commercial center for the faith. In 1574, he purchased land and began excavating the vast holy reservoir (Amrit Sarovar—the Pool of Nectar), around which grew the vibrant metropolis of Ramdaspur, later known globally as Amritsar.
The Lavan and Poetic Legacy
Guru Ram Das was a master musical composer, contributing 638 sublime hymns in 30 different ragas to the Guru Granth Sahib. Most notably, he composed the Lavan—the four-verse wedding hymn describing the soul's spiritual union with the Divine, which forms the irreplaceable liturgical heart of every Sikh Anand Karaj wedding ceremony.
