Archival Overview

Tenth and final human Sikh Guru, warrior-philosopher, and master poet. Founded the Khalsa brotherhood of saint-soldiers at Anandpur Sahib in 1699 and conferred eternal Guruship upon the Guru Granth Sahib.

Biographical Record

Succeeding his martyred father Guru Tegh Bahadur at age nine, Gobind Singh mastered Persian, Sanskrit, Arabic, and martial warfare. On Baisakhi day 1699, he demanded five volunteers willing to sacrifice their heads for righteousness, creating the Panj Pyare and initiating the Khalsa.

Despite losing his mother and all four young sons (the Sahibzadas) in the fight against Mughal imperial tyranny, he authored the majestic Zafarnama (Epistle of Victory) to Emperor Aurangzeb, declaring that taking up the sword is justified only when all diplomatic avenues have failed.
