Archival Overview

Fifth Sikh Guru who designed and constructed the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar with four doors welcoming all directions. Compiled the sacred Adi Granth and was martyred on burning sand for refusing to compromise religious truth.

Biographical Record

Guru Arjan gathered the hymns of his predecessor Gurus alongside writings of Hindu and Muslim saints (Kabir, Ravidas, Farid) into the first authoritative Sikh scripture, the Adi Granth. He laid the foundation stone of the Golden Temple through the Sufi saint Mian Mir.

Tortured on a burning iron plate in Lahore under Emperor Jahangir for refusing to alter scriptures, he surrendered to divine will with serene composure, establishing the supreme Sikh ideal of peaceful martyrdom.
