Guru Angad Dev Ji (Second Sikh Guru & Master of Gurmukhi)

Guru Angad Dev Ji was born in the village of Matte Di Sarai (Muktsar, Punjab). Originally a devout worshipper of the goddess Durga, his life was completely transformed when he heard a Sikh chanting the hymns of Guru Nanak. Journeying to Kartarpur, he surrendered his ego and dedicated himself to serving Guru Nanak.

'Part of My Own Body'

Guru Nanak tested his disciples through severe trials of humility and obedience, which Lehna passed with unshakeable devotion. Nanak embraced him, renaming him Angad (meaning 'a limb of my own body'), and placed five paise and a coconut before him, bowing and anointing him as the second Guru over his own sons.

Gurmukhi and Universal Education

Guru Angad standardized the Gurmukhi script, making literacy and the divine compositions of the Gurus accessible to common people rather than monopolized by Sanskrit-reading elites. He also established physical training grounds (Mal Akharas) alongside temples, insisting that spiritual holiness must be matched by bodily discipline and health.
