Archival Overview
Visionary architect who pioneered Nordic Classicism with the Stockholm Public Library and co-designed the UNESCO World Heritage Skogskyrkogården (Woodland Cemetery).
Biographical Record
Erik Gunnar Asplund was born on September 22, 1885, in Stockholm. Educated at the Royal Institute of Technology and the Klara School of Architecture, a study tour through southern Italy and Greece in 1913 deeply informed his serene classical sensibilities.
In 1915, Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz won the international competition to design Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetery), harmonizing pine forest landscapes with neoclassical chapels, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. His cylindrical rotunda for the Stockholm Public Library (1928) represents the supreme summit of 'Swedish Grace' / Nordic Classicism. As chief architect of the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition, he introduced modern Functionalism to Scandinavia, transforming modern Nordic architectural history.
