Archival Overview
Visionary 19th-century warrior princess and diplomat of the Kingdom of Gwiriko whose statesmanship, military counsel, and negotiations protected Bobo-Dioulasso from destruction.
Biographical Record
Guimbi Ouattara was born around 1836 in Bobo-Dioulasso, the eldest daughter of Dabila Ouattara, King of Gwiriko. Demonstrating extraordinary military acumen and political intellect, she commanded her own royal guards and acted as the chief counsellor to successive rulers.
During a turbulent period of West African history marked by imperial expansion and the conquests of Samori Toure and Tieba Traore of Kenedougou, Princess Guimbi used consummate diplomacy to preserve her city's independence and safety. Renowned for her generosity and statesmanship, she hosted French exploratory missions, including Louis-Gustave Binger in 1888, preventing bloodshed through strategic treaties. Her palace remains a celebrated historic landmark in Burkina Faso.
