Archival Overview
Beloved Flemish Roman Catholic priest and lyric poet whose mystical, nature-inspired poetry in West Flemish dialect revolutionized Netherlandish literature with incomparable musicality and linguistic freshness.
Biographical Record
Son of a Bruges gardener, Gezelle was ordained a priest in 1854 and taught at the Minor Seminary in Roeselare, where he inspired pupils such as Albrecht Rodenbach. Rejecting artificial, standardized Dutch, he drew inspiration from medieval Flemish idioms and the living speech of country folk.
His collections Dichtoefeningen (1858), Gedichten, Gezangen en Gebeden (1862), and crowning masterpiece Tijdkrans (1893) contained timeless lyric poems such as 'Het Schrijverke' (The Whirligig Beetle) and 'Als de ziele luistert', celebrated for their pure Franciscan intimacy with nature.
