Biographical Record

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591–1666 CE), known as Il Guercino due to a childhood squint, was largely self-taught, deeply inspired by Ludovico Carracci.

Called to Rome by Pope Gregory XV, his ceiling fresco of Aurora in the Casino Ludovisi burst through the architecture with dynamic trompe-l'œil quadratura, setting a new benchmark for illusionistic ceilings.
