Foremost general of Shu Han and martial sworn brother of Liu Bei, deified throughout Chinese civilization as Guan Gong (God of War) for loyalty and valor.

Biographical Record

Guan Yu (c. 160–220 AD), courtesy name Yunchang, was the premier general of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms era. Sworn brother of Liu Bei and Zhang Fei, Guan Yu became legendary for wielding the Green Dragon Crescent Blade and riding the Red Hare steed. Renowned for his unwavering loyalty, he rejected Cao Cao's lavish gifts and noble titles to fight his way back to Liu Bei.

Entrusted with defending Jing Province, Guan Yu launched the Siege of Fancheng in 219 AD. When autumn rains caused the Han River to swell, Guan Yu flooded the lowlands, capturing General Yu Jin's seven armies and beheading the fierce warrior Pang De, terrifying Cao Cao into considering moving the capital. Betrayed by Sun Quan's general Lü Meng who launched a surprise rear assault, Guan Yu was captured at Maicheng and executed. Deified as Guandi, he is revered across Asia as the God of War, martial honor, and integrity.
