Biographical Record
Gregory Foster was born in Chicago, Illinois. Attending UCLA, he led the Bruins to NCAA championships, winning NCAA titles in both the 110-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash in 1978 and 1979.
Foster was the premier 110m hurdler of the 1980s, engaging in a legendary, fiercely competitive rivalry with Renaldo Nehemiah. When the IAAF introduced the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983, Foster struck gold in 13.42 seconds. He defended his crown in Rome in 1987 and completed a historic three-peat in Tokyo in 1991, remaining the only male hurdler ever to win three consecutive 110m hurdles world titles. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, he took the silver medal behind Roger Kingdom by three-hundredths of a second. Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1998, Foster battled AL amyloidosis in his final years, undergoing a heart transplant in 2020.
