Archival Overview

German mathematician, logician, and philosopher universally celebrated as the father of modern logic and analytic philosophy, who invented predicate calculus and distinguished Sense and Reference.

Biographical Record

Working in academic obscurity at the University of Jena, Gottlob Frege (1848–1925) published 'Begriffsschrift' (Concept Script) in 1879, creating modern mathematical logic through quantifiers (for all, there exists) and predicate functions, replacing two millennia of Aristotelian syllogistic logic in a single stroke.

In 'The Foundations of Arithmetic' (1884), he championed logicism, arguing that arithmetic is reducible to pure logic. In his 1892 essay 'On Sense and Reference' ('Uber Sinn und Bedeutung'), he solved paradoxes of identity by distinguishing the sense (meaning/connotation) of an expression from its reference (the actual object denoted).
